Research Class August 18th post

Research Week of August 18th

This week we will focus on understanding research tools.  Chapter 2 of the Leedy text will be a valuable companion as we work to master our knowledge of these tools.

On Monday, we will:

1.  Discuss the Loch Ness Article
2.  Read and discuss the McGurk article (to be handed out in class)
3.  Compare and contrast the 2 articles as a group activity
4.  Evaluate our highlighting efforts
5.  Investigate and practice strategies for pre-reading and highlighting
6.  Discuss netiquette
7.  Investigate online safety

Assignment: Develop an online safety contract with your parent(s) / guardian and provide me a signed copy. Due by Monday, August 25th. Daily grade is taken.



On Tuesday, we will:

1.   Work with measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio) and validity and reliability
2.   Read sample research papers and identify components of the research documents
3.   Create graphs and charts using MS Excel
4.   If time allows, begin working with the Magnolia database

On Wednesday, we will:

1.  Work with the Magnolia database
2.  Discuss etiquette for the Distinguished Scholar presentation after school  --

a daily grade will be taken for attending and reflecting on presentation


3.  Discuss directions and a meeting location for the library at USM as well as the library search assignment
4.  Attend the library orientation at USM at 6 pm --

a daily grade will be taken for attending


On Thursday, we will:
1.  Reflect on the Distinguished Scholar presentations
2.  Review the criteria for the

library search --

a major grade due by Monday, September 8th-- no exceptions.  Late work is not accepted.


3.  Compare and contrast deductive logic and inductive reasoning

On Friday, we will: 
1. Review Ch 1 concepts
2. Review Ch 2 concepts
3. Brainstorm on research topics
4. Practice locating online resources and measuring validity and reliability
5. If time permits, we will review sample research proposals
